Sativa Strains 101

Pure sativas are rare due to so much crossbreeding over the years. Sativa-dominant hybrids are typically labeled as sativa.

Most people talk about how weed makes you tired and lazy. While this is true for some, it isn’t true for all. There are definitely strains out there, mainly sativa, that can uplift you and give that “head high.”

This type of high can give you the ability to get off the couch and get some things done! If you struggle with being lazy after using cannabis, try out a sativa and see if there is a difference. Don’t be discouraged if not. There is usually a strain out there for everyone.

Common Effects

The “head high.” We’ve learned that many sativas have the ability to give us energy. What else can they do for us? Well, are you antisocial sometimes, or shy? Being talkative is one of the most reported effects of a sativa! This strain can help you get out of your shell.

Take a look at the graphic for more info about sativas!

*Disclaimer: Understand that none of these effects have actually been fully confirmed through clinical studies. This is mostly anecdotal evidence from what others have experienced! Effects may vary from person to person.

Best time to smoke

Sativas are best consumed during the daytime due to their energizing effects. A morning coffee and a sativa joint are a perfect combo. This will get you active and ready to tackle any tasks you may have.

They can also be a great evening smoke if you are a night owl or have an event to go to. You will be talkative and full of conversation. As always, smoke any strain, whenever, at your own discretion!

Plant Structure

Sativas are like the polar opposite of indicas. They originate close to the equator and are built to withstand the heat. They are very tall, thin plants with bright green, thin leaves.

The flowering period is relatively long. It can take up to 10-12 weeks for buds to fully develop! This is, however, offset by a shorter vegetative period than the indica plant. Expect lower yields with these.

If you’re looking to grow at home (indoors), opt for indica over sativa. You will need less vertical space. If space is no problem or you have the ability to grow outdoors, choose a seed and strain based on your local climate.

The Truth About Sativas

We stated this in the indica 101 article, but please note that not all sativa strains will make you energetic. All indica strains won’t make you tired either. Rather, a lot more goes into the makeup of each strain that includes different percentages of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Body chemistry plays a role as well. In fact, everyone reacts differently to every strain. No one person is alike. Trial and error is your best friend in finding what strains you enjoy most!
