Let’s get stoned! How, you may ask? THC of course. THC is one of the most popular and studied parts of the cannabis plant in today’s culture. This is mainly due to the fact that it is the psychoactive chemical that gets you “high.” It has typically been used for recreational use only and was never thought to have any medical use until recently. Unfortunately, THC is still federally illegal in the United States with no sign of full legalization yet.
Scientific name: Tetrahydrocannabinol (Remember this to sound smart at the next smoke session)
Medical Utility
Due to THC being illegal on the federal level, it has been difficult for labs to get approved to do clinical trials and studies. Even with limited resources, THC has been found to possibly to have medical benefits to treat:
- Pain
- MS related spasticity
- Glaucoma
- Insomnia
- Low appetite
- Nausea
- Anxiety
- Sleep Apnea
- Fibromyalgia
There are two synthetic THC formulations that are approved by the FDA to treat nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients and can also be used for people with anorexia or AIDS to increase appetite.
We hope to see more trials done in the upcoming years so that we can have solidified evidence that THC and cannabis have these effects.
Recreational Utility
The euphoric nature of THC is the main reason many more people have begun to indulge in cannabis. Depending on the strain type, it helps you to either get into a relaxed state of mind or an uplifted, energetic state of mind. (To learn more about that, head over to our strain types post!) This can help amplify your senses and make whatever you are doing more enjoyable. It is a great alternative to alcohol because, for most, there is absolutely no hangover the next day. Don’t be fooled though. There are also downsides to consuming THC, especially excessive amounts.
Pros:
- Elevated Senses
- Increased Creativity
- Relaxation
Cons:
- Anxiety
- Nausea
- Dry Mouth
- Sensory Distortion
Legality
THC is currently ILLEGAL at the federal level. However, it is currently recreational and medically legal in multiple states, as well as decriminalized in many cities. Please check your local laws before purchase and usage of any THC product! Click here to stay up to date on federal policy.
